Parent Lounge
Set within a raw concrete shop lot, the brief called for the creation of a welcoming parent lounge from a space with no existing electrical or mechanical infrastructure. The raw structure lacked warmth, comfort, and spatial definition, qualities essential for a space designed to support rest, waiting, and informal connection. The design approach focused on introducing full functionality while cultivating a calm, human-centred atmosphere within the constraints of the rigid concrete envelope.
Rather than conceal the existing architecture, the concrete floors, walls, and ceiling were retained as a neutral, timeless foundation. New services were thoughtfully integrated, with track lighting and soft pendant fixtures creating layered illumination that enhances comfort and atmosphere. Spatial zoning was achieved through furniture arrangement rather than solid partitions, maintaining openness while defining areas for seating and gathering.
Warm timber finishes, upholstered seating, textured materials, and acoustic panels were layered against the industrial backdrop to introduce softness and tactility. Feature walls and subtle graphic elements provide identity, while indoor planting brings life and visual relief, reinforcing a sense of calm. The reception counter serves as a gentle focal point, designed with natural materials and sculptural restraint to anchor the space without overwhelming it.
The result is a contemporary yet reassuring lounge that balances exposed structure with warmth and comfort. Through thoughtful lighting, material layering, and intentional planning, the once-utilitarian shell has been transformed into a refined, welcoming environment that supports moments of pause, connection, and ease.
